It is important to maintain your own health, but it is also important to keep your children healthy.  It is very important to instill those healthy habits in your children’s minds so they can pass it on to their children as well.  Studies these days have found that obese children and teens have as much plaque in their arteries as a 45 year old adult.  This causes coronary heart disease and many other serious health risks.  No parent wants to see their child struggle with their health.  That is why it is important to make sure your children and you are keeping healthy.

Outdoor Activities

Plan outdoor activities with your children and make sure that your plans don’t change.  When outdoor activities become routine they will start to stick.  Set aside at least one day a week or a day on the weekend to get active with your family.  This winter you can go ice skating, sledding, hiking, have a snowball fight, build a snowman, or trick your kids into shoveling all the snow from your driveway.  Be sure to pack some snacks or a healthy lunch to keep your kids happy without complaining.  Also, stay hydrated by packing water.

You can also sign your family up for some classes.  It is a fun way to get out of the house in the winter and just a great way to spend time with your family.  Join a fitness club, take some yoga or aerobics classes, or find another indoor hobby.  If you have any pets, you can get your kids to take them outside and get both of them active.  If you are wondering if there are any other ways of keeping your whole family healthy, including your dog, there is such a thing as doga.  Doga is yoga for your dog and the rest of your family.

Change Your Surroundings

Another great way to change bad habits is by changing your living room around.  Living rooms are known as being the best room to be lazy and do nothing but sit on the couch and watch TV.  Put some weights right next to your TV so when you turn it on you can see the weights and start to feel guilty enough to pick them up and start moving around.  Put a yoga mat in the center of your room to help remind you to get on the ground and stretch yourself out.  Set a time limit on your TV watching and keep your family on the right routine.

It is also essential to eat right.  So get your family in the right habit to get them to eat healthier and be more health conscious.  Regular physical activity and healthy eating is the easiest way to keep your weight down.  If you would like to find out some more ways of keeping your family healthy, come visit Dr. Jerod for some more tips.  Dr. Jerod is a health and wellness expert and would love to help you and your family stay fit this winter.  We hope you have a healthy and happy holiday season!
