We were all told to drink milk as a kid.  But is it really as beneficial as we originally thought?  While calcium does have many great benefits such as healthy bones, teeth, and skin; if you exceed the recommended amount of calcium per day you are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

What is the Right Amount of Calcium to Consume?

The US Food and Nutrition Board recommends that you stick to 1000 – 1200mg of calcium per day for healthy adults.  Those exceeding 1400mg per day are at an increased risk of death from all causes by 2.5 times.  Part of the reason for this is that most people don’t know calcium is in everyday foods like kale, salmon, tofu, broccoli, cabbage, and turnip greens.  Also, calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body.

We naturally associate milk and calcium with strong bones, but there are many other substitutions that are great for building strong bones and staying healthy.  No one ever talks about flavonoids.  Flavonoids are naturally occurring plant pigments that have antioxidant properties.  They also help keep down inflammation which has been linked to numerous local and systemic diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and celiac disease.
