It seems as though nutrition advice changes every day.  Something that is good for you on Monday might be bad for you by Tuesday!  With all of the nutritional advice out there, it is hard to separate the myths from the facts.

Varied Advice on Fish Oil Supplements

When it comes to multi-vitamins and supplements, the advice is varied.  Some experts say they are critical to optimal health while others say they are useless.  Some vitamins and supplements are more hotly debated than others.  One of these is fish oil supplements.

The Benefits and Risks of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Fish oil contains a high amount of Omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to have some positive health effects.  According to Harvard Medical School, Omega-3 fatty acids play important roles in brain function, normal growth and development, and inflammation. Deficiencies have been linked to a variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, some cancers, mood disorders, arthritis, and more. But that doesn’t mean taking high doses translates to better health and disease prevention.  There are also some reports which say that high levels of fish oil supplements may be linked to prostate cancer.

Talk With Your Nutritionist Before Starting Supplements

If you are thinking of taking fish oil supplements, you should check with your doctor or nutritionist first.  There are some high-quality fish oil supplements on the market.  If you choose not to take supplements, you can also increase your intake of fish and other seafood to bolster your body’s omega-3 levels.
